John Paul II Bridge in Pulawy successfully commissioned!

The new bridge in Pulawy, long-awaited by motorists from both Pulawy, the environs and elsewhere, is now open for use! One of the biggest road and bridge investment projects, comprising the new bridge over the Vistula River and the 1st stage of the Pulawy ring road, was completed on July 11th, 2008 with the much-celebrated opening event. Among the invited guests there was also Polish Minister of Infrastructure Mr. Cezary Grabarczyk.

The construction of the Pulawy ring road, including the new bridge on the Vistula River, is part of a major investment project for the express road no S12 from Radom to Lublin. Once finalised, it will establish an important domestic and international route adapted to handling road haulage transit and passenger traffic, together with seasonal tourist load.

The structure and parameters of the new bridge, named after pope John Paul II, significantly outperform the existing national achievements in civil engineering. The total length of 1038.2m and the length of the main arch span of 212.0 m make the bridge the biggest structure of its kind in Poland and the third largest one in Europe. The new Pulawy bridge may boast about its state-of-art design, being the first in Poland equipped with a comprehensive monitoring system. It has been furnished with special-purpose sensing equipment to ensure user safety, including the recording of structural component strain, traffic load and road surface temperature.

We are pleased to announce that our Company has taken a major part in the bridge construction project. The main tasks performed by Mostostal Pulawy S.A. included: the supply of steel structures of the right-bank overflow spans, the left-bank overflow span, pre-stress components of the main span and inspection trolley guides along the entire length, anti-corrosive protection of the supplied structures and the installation of right-bank spans.

Moreover, the Company made the inspection trolleys in the main and overflow spans for control and maintenance works on the bridge during use and supplied and installed shear studs connecting reinforced concrete deck slab of the road with the steel structures of plate girders.
